“… Hunger and NYSC were not strong enough to break the bond Mma and I had.
Rather we learnt our lesson because as hunger, frustration and typhoid were turning me to a skeleton in Awka, Mma feigned illness in her PPA and went to stay with her uncle, the one with Toyota Corolla.
There, they turned her to nanny, dishwasher, cook, compound cleaner and key holder for 3 weeks, such that immediately Allawee entered, she ran back to her PPA.
We didn’t visit each other again. Rather, we maintain constact. We nearly finished ourselves with “I wish I was there with you’. Then countless mojo were shared between us.
Most importantly, the 4 of us understood ourselves and kept the relationship going. If you think I made a mistake in the number I used, na you sabi.
In school, I remained a diligent C.R.S teacher. It didn’t stop some of the SS2 and SS3 girls from making some funny moves, but I was lucky to escape them all, especially since I managed my 19,800 like the Minister of Budget and Planning.
One year came and passed and the date of our Pass Out Parade (POP) was fixed. We were all glad for many reasons.
First, no more 7/7, no more CDS, no more monthly clearance, no more teaching. We would finally go home to our parents and leave the corpers lodge. I will finally get to stay with Mma in the same state. We can now do as it pleases us.
But life is cruel and unfair, because as our joy was beclouded by fear, uncertainties and unease, because POP means no more Allawee, hence no more free accommodation.
It also means from now on, we are on our and all responsibilities are on us.
The two sets that passed out before us are almost all jobless and wandering the streets, looking for what to eat, just like local fowls. Ọkụkọ hapụ kwọm, o were gịnị zụọ ụmụ ya?
We were paid double Allawee at the end of the month. That was #39,600.
We were expected to plan all our lives on top of that #39,600. There was nothing we didn’t think of starting with that #39,600. Confusion was living rent free in our heads as we prepared for POP, but thank God for ULTIMATE CYCLER!
